JPMorgan Tops The Bank AI Index For A Fifth Year, HSBC Drops Out Of The Top Ten, And Britain's Best Is 15th: What The 2026 Evident Index Says About UK Banking
The 2026 Evident AI Index, published on 6 October, ranked 50 of the world's largest banks on AI talent, innovation, leadership and transparency. JPMorgan Chase is first for the fifth year running, with Capital One and RBC behind it. UBS, sixth, is Europe's only bank in the top ten after HSBC slipped from eighth to eleventh. Lloyds is the highest-ranked UK bank at 15th, NatWest 17th and Barclays 19th, up four places. The industry is moving faster than ever - the average score rose 26%, nearly three times the pace of previous years, and banks have announced more than 1,100 AI use cases since 2021 - and the leaders are pulling away. Here is what the index measures, why UK banks sit in the second tier, and the three things that would move them up.

Rise in the average bank's score year on year - nearly three times the pace of 2023-25
Evident's index has become the closest thing the industry has to a league table for AI, and the 2026 edition, published on 6 October, tells a story of acceleration and divergence. The top ten is JPMorgan Chase, Capital One, RBC, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Wells Fargo, UBS, Bank of America, Citigroup, Morgan Stanley and TD. JPMorgan ranks first or second on all four pillars and has widened its lead; Evident's co-chief executive Alexandra Mousavizadeh attributes it to an enterprise-wide strategy that pushes AI capability into 22 business lines and 10 functions. Citigroup jumped from 12th to 8th, Bank of America from 10th to 7th and Wells Fargo from 6th to 5th, while Morgan Stanley slipped from 5th to 9th.
For Britain the headlines are less comfortable. HSBC fell from 8th to 11th, leaving UBS as Europe's sole representative in the top ten. Lloyds Banking Group is the highest-ranked UK bank at 15th, NatWest is 17th, down one place, and Barclays 19th, up four. All three sit in the second tier where most European banks cluster. That is not a story of UK banks standing still - Lloyds disclosed around £50m of value from generative AI and expects more than £100m in 2026, and Barclays has just committed to put Claude Code in the hands of half its developers - but of others moving faster.
What The 2026 Data Shows Across The Industry
- Speed: the average score rose 26%, or 9.6 points, nearly three times the moving average of 2023-25. AI deployment accelerated more in the past year than at any point since the index began.
- Scale: the 50 banks have publicly announced more than 1,100 distinct AI use cases since 2021.
- Returns: the number of banks putting a figure on AI's financial return rose from 8 to 12.
- People: 'enablement' talent - engineers building the tools to manage and govern AI - rose 21%, and leading banks are growing headcount while improving revenue per employee.
- Controls: the leaders are prioritising guardrails for agentic AI - the systems that act rather than answer.
- Competition: neobanks such as Nubank and Revolut, now with conditional US charter approval, and frontier AI labs moving into financial services are the challengers the incumbents are racing.
Why UK Banks Sit In The Second Tier
Three explanations fit the evidence. First, scale of talent: the top three banks employ AI specialists in numbers UK banks have not matched, and talent carries the most weight. Second, disclosure: UK banks have historically said less about AI use cases and returns than their North American peers, and an index built on public evidence rewards those who publish. Third, legacy: UK high-street banks run some of the oldest core systems in the developed world, and AI that cannot reach clean data in real time delivers less. None of these is a verdict on British ambition; all three are fixable.
- 01Build enablement talent, not just data scientists. The 21% rise in engineers who build agent supervision, evaluation and governance tools is where the leaders are investing. These are the people who turn pilots into production.
- 02Measure and publish returns. Lloyds' £50m figure is exactly the kind of disclosure that moves both the index and investor confidence. More UK banks should put numbers on outcomes - and the discipline of measuring them improves the projects.
- 03Fix the plumbing. Agents are only as good as the systems they can reach. Exposing core data through governed APIs and modern banking interfaces is less glamorous than a new model and does more to move a bank up the table.
“The index rewards banks that hire for AI, ship AI and say what it delivered. UK banks are doing the second; the first and third are where the places are won.”
The Bottom Line
The 2026 Evident AI Index puts JPMorgan first for a fifth year, shows the industry accelerating - average scores up 26%, more than 1,100 use cases, more banks measuring returns - and leaves UBS as Europe's only top-ten bank after HSBC fell to 11th, with Lloyds, NatWest and Barclays at 15th, 17th and 19th. The gap is about talent, disclosure and legacy plumbing rather than ambition, and each is fixable: build the engineering that turns AI into governed production systems, measure and publish what it returns, and modernise the interfaces agents depend on. Britain has the regulators, the talent pool and the market to put a bank back in the top ten. That is the AI and banking platform work we do as a fintech AI agency in London, and the index has just set the scoreboard.
