24/7 Trading Reaches European Blue Chips: Deutsche Börse Opens Round-The-Clock DAX 40 Trading On 360X, Weeks Before Nasdaq Goes To 23 Hours

Deutsche Börse has gone live with 24/7 trading in DAX 40 shares, using request for quote on its 360X venue overnight and at weekends while Xetra keeps its normal hours and auctions. Nasdaq moves to near 23-hour weekday trading on 6 December. How the German model works, and what round-the-clock equities mean for trading automation.

24/7 trading has reached Europe's blue chips. Deutsche Börse has gone live with round-the-clock trading in the 40 shares of the DAX index, using the regulated multilateral trading facility of its affiliate 360X for execution overnight and at weekends, The TRADE reported on 27 October 2026. Xetra keeps its normal hours and auctions; outside them, clients can request quotes in DAX 40 stocks on 360X at any hour of any day.

The launch lands six weeks before Nasdaq moves to a near 23-hour weekday schedule on 6 December, a change we covered in September. Together they mark a turn: equity trading in both the US and Europe is no longer bound by a single daytime session, and every system that prices, monitors or reports on those shares has to work on the new clock.

How Does Deutsche Börse's 24/7 Trading Model Work?

It layers three venues. Xetra, the main market, stays open Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 17:30 CET. T7's extended retail service runs on weekdays from 8:00 to 22:00 CET. Outside those hours, standard DAX 40 instruments trade only through 360X's RfQ module, overnight and at weekends. Together they let clients trade euro-settled DAX 40 shares at any time.

Deutsche Börse has drawn a clear line around the benchmark. Core Xetra processes do not change, standard auction cycles continue, and closing prices from off-hours trading on 360X will not set Xetra opening prices or affect its opening auctions. Existing Deutsche Börse clients can switch on 360X through an administrative process in the member section, and all trades settle bilaterally into the client's Clearstream accounts.

Eric Leupold, head of cash market at Deutsche Börse, said the group "aims to be the first European financial market infrastructure to enable a 24/7 offering" in traditional blue-chip equities. Carlo Kölzer, head of digital and FX at Deutsche Börse and co-chief executive of 360X, described the design: "By enabling the DAX 40 constituents on 360X, we are safely bridging deep, regulated liquidity pools" with round-the-clock availability, while protecting Xetra's benchmark cycles.

Why Is 24/7 Trading Spreading Now?

Demand from outside the home time zone and competition from crypto, which never closes. In the US, Robinhood has run its own 24 Hour Market since 2023, and Nasdaq will add an overnight session from December so US stocks trade nearly 23 hours a day from Sunday evening to Friday. Nasdaq will run a day session from 4:00 to 20:00 ET and a night session from 21:00 to 4:00 ET, with a one-hour break between them. Retail platforms are building for constant activity: when Robinhood unveiled AI agents that can trade inside its app at the end of September, its line was "The stock market never sleeps, and neither should your portfolio."

Regulators have noticed. In his speech at Mansion House on 22 October 2026, FCA chief executive Nikhil Rathi listed 24/7 trading and prices forming over weekends among the changes in wholesale markets, alongside decentralised finance and parallel market structures, in a speech warning that threats to market integrity are as serious as he has seen. His summary of the regulator's challenge applies to firms too: "If we maintain an analogue approach in a digital age, new products enter the market faster than we adapt."

What Does Round-The-Clock Equity Trading Mean For Trading Automation?

It turns trading automation from a convenience into a requirement. A desk that staffs risk monitoring for an eight-and-a-half-hour session cannot staff the same checks for 168 hours a week. Price alerts, exposure limits, margin calls, news monitoring and incident escalation all need to run on their own overnight and at weekends, with people brought in only when a rule says so.

The data layer changes too. With 360X prices kept apart from Xetra's opening auction, a DAX 40 share will have an official daytime price and a separate stream of off-hours quotes. Charts, reference prices and valuation reports need to label which is which, and CFD providers that quote these names out of hours now have a regulated venue to compare against. Weekend news that used to be absorbed at Monday's open may now be priced on Saturday.

AI agents make the point sharper. On 21 October Interactive Brokers launched autonomous trading that lets connected AI platforms place orders without the client approving each one, and Robinhood has previewed agents that carry out standing instructions around the clock. Put agents that do not sleep next to venues that do not close, and orders can arrive at hours when nobody at the broker is watching. The controls have to be in the system, because the people will not always be at the desk.

Our View: The Venue Is Ready. Most Firm Operations Are Not

Deutsche Börse's design is careful: it protects the benchmark auction, uses RfQ where liquidity is thin and settles through existing accounts. The harder change is inside the firms that connect to it. Most broker and prop firm operations still assume a quiet period every night and two quiet days every week, and many of their controls rely on someone checking a screen in the morning.

The firms that cope best will automate the watching, not the trading: limits enforced by the platform, alerts routed to whoever is on call, and a clear log of what happened overnight that a person can read in five minutes on Monday. That is unglamorous work, and it is exactly what a 24/7 market exposes when it is missing.

“In a 24/7 market, the first thing to automate is not the trading. It is the watching: limits, alerts and a log someone can read on Monday morning.”

What It Means For Trading And Fintech Firms

  • Brokers and CFD providers: decide whether to quote DAX 40 names out of hours and, if so, how your pricing relates to 360X quotes. Make sure margin and close-out logic runs at weekends without manual steps.
  • Prop trading firms: rule engines that reset daily loss limits at a fixed time need a clear definition of the trading day when markets never close. Write it down before a weekend trade tests it.
  • Research and quant teams: treat 360X off-hours prices as a separate series from Xetra prices, and label charts and backtests so nobody mixes the two.
  • Compliance leads: surveillance and best execution monitoring must cover every hour your clients can trade. Check that alerts raised at weekends reach a person and are recorded.
  • Fintech and trading startups: overnight and weekend operations tooling, from automated risk checks to on-call alerting and plain-language morning summaries, is a gap for small and mid-sized firms.

The Bottom Line

24/7 trading in Europe's largest blue chips is live: DAX 40 shares now trade on 360X by request for quote outside Xetra and T7 hours, with the Xetra auction kept separate and trades settling into Clearstream. Nasdaq follows with near 23-hour trading from 6 December. AlchmAI, a London trading technology and AI studio, builds market data pipelines and risk dashboards for brokers and prop firms, and the lesson of this launch is that a market that never closes needs monitoring that never sleeps.
